Sources told Chronicle that a former broadcaster Robson Mhandu has been approached to replace Ndebele, credited with the smooth running of the league since taking over three years ago.
“There are some who have openly said that they don’t want Ndebele but the majority want him, so I think he will stay. PSL president Twine Phiri has said that he would rather step down than have Ndebele leave his post,” said a PSL source.
Vice-president in charge of human resources, Joseph Zulu, who was told to flight an advert in the Press for the chief executive’s post, is reported to be reluctant to do so as up to now, the advert is yet to be flighted.
“We said why should we advertise when Ndebele is there and I can tell you if we let him go, the league will be doomed. He has been on a three-year contract but we now want to make it permanent,” said the source.
Contacted for comment last night, PSL president, Twine Phiri denied he was plotting Ndebele’s ouster, saying he was satisfied with his performance.
“I don’t want to get into the politics side of this whole thing but I can confirm to you that as the league president, I am more than satisfied with Ndebele’s performance, that is all I can say,” said Phiri.
Sponsors of the league, Delta Beverages, through their Castle Lager brand, expressed satisfaction with the level of professionalism that the league has adopted, an attribute of Ndebele’s work.
“We are going to review our relationship with the PSL next year where we will look at the last two years and then see the way forward. At the moment, we have not sat but I must confess that we are generally happy with the way things have been going so far,” Delta Beverages marketing manager Patricia Murambinda said in an interview on the sidelines of the Soccer Stars of the Year finalists selection process in the capital.
She said the last two seasons had gone according to their expectations and the company was happy with the level of competition exhibited by the clubs.
Ndebele did not want to comment about his future in the league.
He has been credited with the smooth running of the league but his stance toward professionalism has seen him at loggerheads with some board of governors.
However, some clubs want an executive coup that will see the former Highlanders secretary-general and chairman being replaced by their “favoured” candidate.
Sources said during a meeting in Harare last week, some governors threatened to walk out when other members brought in the issue of the PSL head of secretariat for discussion.
