PSL referees get sponsor

mining company offering to pay the officials is successfully concluded.
The present arrangement is that the home team pays $120 to the centre man and $100 each to the two assistant referees, the fourth referee and the match commissioner.
With 15 home games per season, each club, if the deal materialises, will save $7 800 in officials’ fees per season.
Sources within the Zifa structures recently told Chronicle Sport that a mining company had shown interest in taking care of referees fees, in a move that is likely to reduce corruption in the sport.
“Those guys have said that they are ready to pay our referees next year but the finer details are still being ironed out,” said the source, who refused to be named.
Contacted for comment, the Zimbabwe Soccer Referees Association secretary, Batsirayi Muchenje, said while he was not involved in the talks, the move if it materialised, was a welcome development. He said it had been difficult for clubs to pay referees who at times spent their money to travel to the match venues and were not paid.
“It will be a milestone achievement in the history of the profession in this country. Referees will also concentrate solely on the field of play instead of worrying about their money as has been the situation all along,” said Muchenje.
The Premier Soccer League has over the years bailed out a number of clubs after failing to raise referees fees due to poor attendance at matches.
