RESIDENTS of Pumula East in Bulawayo came together for a community clean-up campaign organised by the Pumula East Rovers, led by 26-year-old Gxilenkosi Mpala.
The event, held on Sunday, saw youths and other community members equipped with bin liners, gloves and masks as they collected litter and cleaned up public spaces.
The initiative was inspired by the need to maintain a clean environment in line with national calls for improved sanitation and environmental responsibility.
Mpala said the clean-up campaign was part of efforts to promote a safer and healthier community.
“To support President ED Mnangagwa’s initiatives and promote a healthy and safe environment for the community, addressing issues like sewer blockages and litter. We also managed to save money to hire some individuals to cut long grass that promotes crimes such as robbery,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of community-led initiatives in addressing local challenges and fostering a sense of responsibility among residents.
“The aim is to back the president’s initiatives and promote health and safety and every child who participated was given $1.50 as a participation fee to motivate their engagement.
The campaign forms part of the Pumula East Rovers’ broader efforts to promote environmental awareness, including projects such as bin-making and recycling.
