Pupil-to-pupil interaction exalts Milestone College

Morris Mtisi
MILESTONE College in Rusape recently hosted St Faith’s High School and neighbouring Dumbabwe Secondary School in a pupil-to-pupil interaction. The event was both exemplary and highly infectious in bringing students together and developing one direction and one purpose for them.

The visiting students took a tour of the school and quickly settled down to sharing of wisdom and tips about how they manage school work at their schools.

Common amongst the tips were the need for students to be relentless, focused and hard working. It was very inspiring to hear from the students themselves, ideas of achieving success that only good teachers and professional educationists often give: being organised, having a reading timetable, group discussions, carefully studying syllabi and being watchful of detractors.

The St Faith’s 24-hour open library system pleasantly surprised many students present and certainly earned admiration for the best performing High School in Manicaland, indeed the whole of Zimbabwe. While many schools, especially in the deep rural areas have no library existing, St Faith’s own is open 24/7. If that is not something to learn from this fantastic centre of academic equilibrium, no school will ever learn anything new.

The function was attended by more than 50 students and teachers from the participating schools.

Lessons learnt from this pupil-to-pupil interaction were: Students love socio- academic outreaches and learn a lot from their peers especially those they respect academically. So-called high performing schools have a moral obligation to ‘infect’ those students they beat on their way up. If education benefits only the bearers and not other people, that education is good for nothing. Schools must stop operating like islands but interact in a cross pollination of ideas and wisdom of making education a common source of life and growth.

Congratulations go to Mai Mupfunya, school director- Milestone College, for allowing this civilized way of inspiring students to love learning. She proved a point at her school assisted by Mr Chiketero, College Principal, and Mr Chidzere, English master, who organized this successful event on 30 March 2015 at Milestone College.

In a post-mortem interview, Mrs Tsitsi Mupfunya, the Milestone College director, said the pupil-to-pupil interaction was the way to go.

“I look forward to hosting more schools in the future as their students as well as ours have an opportunity to inspire and motivate each other to make the best use of their time at school,” said the Milestone College educational strategist and executive administrator.
