A Bulawayo man who was arrested for killing a python appeared in court yesterday facing a charge of hunting a protected species. He was not asked to plead.

Provincial Magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo remanded Mupambwa out of custody to December 29.

Prosecuting Mclean Ndlovu told the court that Edward Mupambwa, 23, killed a python on Sunday when it invaded his chicken-run at his home in Nkulumane.

Mupambwa was arrested together with three accomplices who were released after investigations.

The court heard that Mupambwa and his father heard a dog barking at around 9PM and went out to check.

They discovered the python which had already swallowed chickens.

Mupambwa allegedly pounded the python as it attempted to enter the house.

The dead python was later handed over to Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.

The python was valued at $1,500.
