Following its liquidation, Chapungu Sculpture Park’s collection of sculptures done in stone, wood and metal are being exhibited as part this year’s edition of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA).
Some of the pieces, which have been displayed at Chapungu for years, depict social life and the way people interact in their day to day lives.
The exhibition, running under the permanent collection, will present works by veteran and young artists.
“Here is an opportunity to present some of the works that were done several years ago by veteran artists who have been working at the sculpture park for years. A good number of these artists took their time to use stone and metal to come up with sculptures of international repute,” said National Gallery of Zimbabwe executive director Doreen Sibanda.
Close to 50 pieces are on display where artists came up with various illustrations using different mediums.
Some of the pieces were done by veterans Bernard Takawira, Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Fanizani Akuda, Joseph Ndandarika and Sylvester Mubayi, among others.
The pieces on show trace and interpret thoughts, trends and various activities in life.
In as far as visual art is concerned, Chapungu Sculpture Park Harare has produced some great works which have been exhibited in the region and beyond.
