An elderly couple from Bulawayo’s Queens Park East suburb was plunged into sadness on Christmas day after their house and property worth thousands of dollars was burnt down.
While Gabriel Gezi (84) and his wife Rosa Gezi (74) were relaxing in the living room their nephew rushed to them saying fire had broken out in the spare bedroom.
Speaking to a B-Metro news crew Gabriel Gezi said he rushed to check and found the spare bedroom up in flames.
“I found the spare bedroom in flames and all things that were there were burnt to ashes,” said the distraught Gezi.
He said as he was still thinking how to put out the fire, the fire quickly moved to the living room where there was his wife who was a bit under the weather.
“I had to dash to the living room and grabbed my wife and rushed outside with her, as a result she suffered trauma and we took her to hospital,” he said.
He added: “The fire burnt all my property that included beds, stoves, fridge, two television sets, blankets, clothes and all kitchen utensils.”
He said part of the bride price money that he had kept in his bedroom also went up in smoke.
“Unfortunately R6 000 which was part of the bride price I had kept in our matrimonial bedroom was also burnt beyond recognition,” he said.
He blamed the fire brigade for taking too long to come.
“Fire brigade took more than two hours to come and when they came the roof in some of the rooms had caved in while in some of the rooms it had fallen and all the property was severely burnt. The fire brigade crew said they delayed because they got lost and if they had come on time my property was going to be saved,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Bulawayo chief fire officer Richard Peterson were fruitless as his mobile phone was unreachable.
