REGISTRATION for the Beitbridge Mayor’s anti-litter half-marathon has opened and participants have been urged to register early.
The half-marathon will be held in the border town on Saturday morning to raise awareness on littering and capacitate the community in solid waste management.
Beitbridge community produces about 1 000 tonnes of solid waste a month and the local authority can only collect 700 tonnes.
Event co-ordinator Raniel Ndou said more than 52 athletes had already registered and those seeking to participate can register online or visit the local authority’s main town office or housing office in the Dulivhadzimu suburb.
This year’s event will be held under the theme “Beitbridge My Home, My Smart City; Running against Litter”.
“We now have an online registration platform where people can register from anywhere and we are encouraging participants to utilise the online platform to register on time,” said Ndou.
“Registration is open for those who are 16 years and above and athletes will pay a nominal fee of either R30 or US$2,” said Ndou.
He said the main 21km race will start at Mtetengwe Business Centre along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo Road and end in Beitbridge’s CBD.
Ndou said the 15km road race will start at Malala Business Centre and end in the CBD, while the 5km power walk will start from the Masvingo Road turn-off and end in the CBD.
The event has been categorised into paralympic athletes, juniors, seniors, masters, veterans and grandmasters.
