RADIO BuKalanga has donated sports kits to four schools in Plumtree Town and Mangwe District as part of its ongoing community engagement and development efforts. The schools that received the donations are Alan Redfern Primary School, Mqokolweni High School, Tahangana High School and Nguwanyana Primary School.

The donations were made in commemoration of World Radio Day.

Radio BuKalanga station manager, Ms Yvonne Buzwane, said the initiative was implemented in partnership with various stakeholders.

“Radio Bukalanga last year undertook an initiative to donate ballgame kits to local schools as part of its ongoing community engagement and development efforts.

This initiative was inspired by the work of Mr Sikhumbuzo Mlalazi, a philanthropist who, in collaboration with UK-based partners Mark and Neil, has been supporting schools in Bulilima District and Plumtree Town through sports kit donations. Mr Mlalazi has donated to Thekwane High School in Bulilima, Mathendele Primary School in Plumtree, as well as senior community soccer teams in Bulilima.”

Ms Buzwane said they engaged Mr Mlalazi to explore extending similar support to schools in Mangwe District, which had previously not benefited.

“The donation programme is intended to build and strengthen lasting relationships between Radio BuKalanga and local schools, as well as the broader education system. Beyond sports, the station is seeking to collaborate with schools and teachers on educational content.

The long-term vision is to introduce radio-based learning, where teachers can either deliver lessons on air or provide pre-recorded material, contributing to improved pass rates across BuKalanga,” she said.

The initiative has received backing from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education through the District Schools Inspector’s office.

“These schools have existing partnerships with the station, having collaborated on various activities in 2025, including the Mwedzi Wagala Cultural Festival hosted by Tahangana and Nguwanyana, as well as prize-giving events at Mqokolweni High School,” said Ms Buzwane.

She said the station would continue strengthening partnerships with schools and expanding the programme, while also seeking additional support from organisations such as Taking Football to Africa and Beyond. — @themkhust
