Gumbo will meet Zifa to finalise the trip today.
Zimbabwe were last week paired with Angola in what promises to be a closely contested match on the weekend of 7-9 September.
Gumbo confirmed on Sunday that he would be travelling to watch the Zimbabwe champions take on Interclube.
The spying mission, he said, would help him watch some of the Angola-based players in the Interclube line up as well as gather as much information about how the Angolans play and where in the world for the foreign legion.
“I will be travelling with Dynamos to Interclube. I will watch the match and have a rough idea of what to expect from the Interclube players in the national team.
“While there I will try to gather as much information about their national team that we can use for the Warriors when we meet in September and the return leg in October.
“I believe we have a fair chance of reaching the finals in South Africa next year. I will expect good preparations for the match and I am happy there is a trip to Botswana and Zifa have said they will also organise another match on the Fifa calendar date in August,” said Gumbo.
Jonathan Mashingaidze, the Zifa chief executive officer, confirmed yesterday that Zifa would facilitate travel arrangements for the Warriors coach.
“Yes, we would like Gumbo to go on an espionage mission to Angola. As Zifa, we are committed to qualifying for the finals and we will do everything possible to help the coaches achieve this dream,” said Mashingaidze.
He said the Warriors would next week play in a four-team tournament in Botswana which would help the coaches come up with a rough sketch of the local players to be considered.
“The tournament in Botswana next week on Monday and Tuesday, will be a perfect opportunity for the Warriors to warm up and come up with combinations of the locally based players.
“In August, we will certainly get them an opponent on the Fifa calendar date,” said the Zifa chief executive officer.
He said he would be meeting Gumbo in the capital today to discuss the way forward and the trip to Angola.
Mashingaidze said Zifa had since reached a stage where qualifying for South Africa was no longer their own baby.
“It should be every Zimbabwean’s worry going to the Afcon finals in South Africa. It cannot be left to Zifa alone. As a nation, we have to stand up and create an enabling environment for the boys to qualify.
“We call upon the Government, companies and individuals to come forward to make this tie a fruitful one by availing resources for a good camp and other resources like incentives for the boys.
“If we work together as a nation and put aside differences Zimbabwe football can conquer, then South Africa is possible.
“We all want to be there as spectators of our own team and that calls for the Warriors to qualify. My challenge is for all Zimbabweans at home and abroad to help Zifa prepare adequately with good resources for the boys,” said Mashingaidze.
Matches between Zimbabwe and Angola have always been hotly contested.
