HEaS now a one-man gang! Chicken Inn head coach Rahman a?Rusha? Gumbo is not in a rush to appoint an assistant coach after the resignation of Thulani Sibanda last week because he has been down that road before.
a?I have worked without an assistant coach before. Itas really not a problem for me. I have done it in the past and I can still do it again here, so Iam not in a hurry to appoint another assistant coach,a said Gumbo.
Sibanda tendered his resignation letter to the Gamecocks bosses last week citing failure to meet a target of 20 points from 10 games set for the technical team when they took over from Joey Antipas, now with South African National First Division side AmaZulu.
Itas rare in football circles for an assistant coach to resign over poor results leaving behind the head coach, the man who takes the flak when things go wrong.
An underperforming head coach is usually fired together with his assistants.
In a few cases an assistant coach can be spared his job when his boss is fired as in the case of former Highlanders player and Harare City FCas Mkhuphali Masuku when Taurai Mangwiro was shown theAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA door at the municipality owned team to be replaced by Moses Chunga.
Chicken Inn chairman Lifa Ncube said the club would stand by Gumboas decisionA to operate without a second in command.
Sikhumbuzo Banda will work with Gumbo until a replacement is made. Julius Ndlovu will remain goalkeepersa coach.
a?Itas the prerogative of the head coach to appoint an assistant so we will wait for Gumbo to inform us when he has identified the person he wants to work with,a? said Ncube.
Interestingly, Sibanda was recommended by Gumbo for the Chicken Inn job, the two having worked together at Zifa Southern Region club Bulawayo Chiefs.
