Rainbow cashier arrested over $14 000 theft

Rainbow TowersCourt Reporter
A cashier at Rainbow Hotel in Bulawayo has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $14 000 from his employer by altering daily takings purporting that clients had cancelled bookings.
Musa Massimo, age not given but of 56766 Old Lobengula, would purport that some clients had cancelled their bookings when in fact they would have slept at the hotel and paid.

He appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Victor Mpofu to answer to a charge of theft yesterday.
Massimo denied ever stealing from his employers and was remanded in custody to 5 September for start of trial.

Massimo’s duties included booking and checking-in clients, accepting payments and banking money received on a daily basis.
Mr Shepherd Nhamburo for the State, would seek to prove that between 1 September and 31 December last year, Massimo on 35 occasions allegedly received cash amounting to $14 710 from different clients, which he was supposed to bank on a daily basis.

The court was told that instead of banking the money, Massimo allegedly converted it to his own use.
To cover his tracks, he would purport some clients had  cancelled their bookings  when in fact they would have  slept at the hotel and paid.
The offence was unearthed by the Rainbow Tourism Group head of internal audit and risk, Mr Samson Chitsato when he carried out an internal audit.

A report was made to the police leading to Massimo’s arrest.
