A 17-year-old Hurungwe girl allegedly repeatedly raped by her uncle at her rural home last year, escaped the assaults after getting a job in Chitungwiza, but later became pregnant.

She then gave birth at her employer’s place in Chitungwiza but buried it in a shallow grave, only revealing what happened and what she had done after she fell sick and her employer prayed for her.

After hearing the tale, her employer took her to the police. The girl was immediately arrested on infancticide charges and is detained at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals under police guard, pending investigations.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the girl was raped several times by her uncle last year.

In February, she left home and was employed as a maid, giving birth in September.

When her employer prayed for her, she narrated the rape case and how she gave birth and buried the child in the yard. Police are now investigating.
