Magistrate Ms Memory Chigwaza slapped Peter Chifamba with a 15-year jail term on Thursday before suspending three years for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence within that period.
In aggravation, prosecutor Mr Editor Ma-vuto had called for a stiffer penalty arguing that cases of child abuse were on the increa-se.
“He was a neighbour to the complainant and instead of being a guardian or protecting the minor, he went on to rape her thereby betraying the trust that was bestowed on him by the complainant as a neighbour.
“The accused deserves to be uprooted from the society, he behaves like an animal.
“Cases of child abuse are on the increase – hardly a day passes without all eight regional courts receiving cases of rape involving minors.
“A deterrent sentence has to be passed not only on the accused but to would be offenders,” he said.
