AN 82-YEAR-OLD Nyanga man, who raped his 10-year-old neighbour, has been convicted and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
The matter was heard before the Mutare Magistrates Court by Magistrate Phathekile Msipa while Mr Last Goredema prosecuted.
The state had it that on an unknown day in September last year, the victim was walking alone from her home towards a river around midday and the elderly offender, (name withheld to protect the victim) who is a close neighbour was walking in the opposite direction on the same path.
They met on the path in a bushy area and the offender grabbed the victim’s hand and dragged her off the path into the bush.
“She resisted and tried to pull away but she failed. The offender continued to drag the victim deeper into the bush while holding her dress.
“The victim cried for help, but no one heard her. The offender then threatened to kill her with a silver knife that he took from his bag, ordering her to be quiet,” said Mr Goredema.
He also said the offender then forced the girl to the ground and raped her.
“After the rape, he threatened to kill her if she told anyone. The minor later disclosed the assault to her aunt in December 2024 who then took her to the police to report the crime, leading to the arrest of the offender,” he said.
