REGIONAL magistrate Letwin Rwodzi yesterday sentenced a convicted rapist to an additional 12 years in prison after finding him guilty of sodomising his cellmate at Harare Remand Prison.

The offender, Emmanuel Magede, was already serving a 10-year term for raping a minor.

He was initially handed a 12-year sentence for the latest offence, with two years suspended on condition of good behaviour.

However, the magistrate also brought back his previously suspended sentence from the rape conviction, leaving him to serve a total of 22 years behind bars.

In passing sentence, magistrate Rwodzi said the court had a duty to protect the rights of all inmates and noted that aggravated indecent assault inside prison was a serious violation.

She added that Magede showed no remorse, highlighting that his latest offence came shortly after being convicted of raping a minor.

Prosecutor Loveit Muringwa told the court that on July 23, 2025, at around midday, Magede attacked his cellmate while they were bathing.

The complainant was bending over to wash his head when Magede forced himself on the victim.

The assault was witnessed by another inmate, Tinashe Muyambo, who opened the bathroom door and saw Magede in the act.

Muyambo then informed fellow inmate Antony Chambarambanda, who in turn reported the matter to prison officer Tafadzwa Nembaware.

The case was later reported to police, leading to Magede’s prosecution.

The complainant was medically examined, and a medical affidavit was produced in court, confirming the assault and securing Magede’s conviction.
