Rapper focuses on social commentary

BULAWAYO-based emerging hip hop artiste Lincoln “Linc Banks” Makore wants to be known as a rapper who is a social commentator, singing about what was happening around him instead of imagined wealth and lavish lifestyles. The 24-year-old former Gifford High School pupil who has been rapping since 2008 is an artiste that people should look out for in the future.

He is part of a group of aspiring young rappers in the city who have taken a leaf from Cal_Vin to create a hip hop movement.

Born in Nketa 9, Linc Banks believes that hip hop music gave him a new perspective to life.

“My music is mostly about social commentary. I heard the Roots, Common and MosDef and I thought that’s the direction I wanted to take with my music. I’ve always believed that music is food for the soul because there’s nothing as nourishing and refreshing as a good song,” said Linc Banks.

He said the hip hop scene in the city was looking up after years in oblivion with collaborations between South Africa’s Cassper Nyovest and Luveve born rapper Cal_Vin now a possibility.

“Cal_Vin and Cassper remixed a good track and what they produced is a hit. Things have been looking down for the past years for hip hop in Bulawayo but there’s a movement of artistes who want to make it big in the industry. I’m one of those artistes,” said Linc Banks.

He said collaborations could also propel someone to stardom and that was why he worked with Cal_Vin on his new album Point of no return.
