MANICALAND boxing fans will get a rare chance of watching international boxers when Mutare hosts a tournament in May.
Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy have partnered with Mutare City Council in a bid to promote the sweet science sport in that part of the country.
An international boxing tournament will be held at Mutare Sports Club on May 23.
According to Charles Manyuchi, several international boxers will fight in Mutare.
“This is the first of its kind for the City of Mutare.
“We have boxers coming from Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania.
“We’re expecting some good fights out there. But the main issue is about development of boxing in Mutare and Manicaland at large,” Manyuchi told Zimpapers Sports Hub.
Some of the international boxers on the bout card include star female pugilist Lolita Muzeya and Mbachi Kaonga of Zambia.
Local pugilists on the card include Jeremiah “Jingo” Mhere, Patience Masitara, Evans Husaihwevhu, Lawrence Chiyangwa and John Andrew.
“All is set now, and we are glad to be finally hosting a tournament in Mutare,” said Manyuchi.
The former World Boxing Council Silver welterweight champion is now into boxing promotion.
He is also promoting talent through his Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy.
Some of the boxers in his stable include Husaihwevhu and Andrew.
“The future of Zimbabwean boxing lies in the upcoming pugilists.
“We did our part, and boxing should not die because we are retiring.
“We want to promote boxing in all the four corners of Zimbabwe,” said Manyuchi.
Despite hosting a number of amateur tournaments, especially the National Youths Games, Mutare is not a powerhouse when it comes to professional boxing.
“We want to change that narrative.
“Professional boxing should be vibrant in Mutare and Manicaland, so we will make sure the sport grows in this part of Zimbabwe,” added Manyuchi.
