‘Rebels’ with a cause?

set for a grand entrance on the entertainment scene with a show dubbed “Rebels Ignited” that will also feature Peter Moyo, Jah Prayzah and Suluman Chimbetu at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex in two weeks’ time.

According to Gomba, one of the founding members of the group, if all goes well, recording of the seven-track album, titled “Ndizvo Zviripo”, will be completed next week.
“The instrumentals and most of the vocals are already done, now we await the return of Slomo from Zambia so that he can complete the rest of the singing and we would be good to go,” said a confident Gomba to our sister paper The Sunday Mail.

It is, however, the willingness of Suluman to “bless” the album launch that is going to be a surprise to many.
It shows that Sulu who gave Slomo a befitting sending off a fortnight ago is keeping his word that he harbours no grudge with his former dancer.

However, the absence of Macheso from the album launch shows that there is still a rift between the sungura ace and his former employees.
When Macheso broke away from Khiama Boys, he did not take it lightly as he went on to pen a song that took a dig on Nicholas Zakariah.The song “Pakutema Munda”, off his debut album, has all the ingredients of a used soul who is very bitter about his former employer.

It remains to be seen if the “rebels” have a song on their album that would be hitting back at their former employers, or will it contain celebratory songs, to clearly show that they have since moved on and will not let anything come in their way. All eyes would be on the “rebels” and it remains to be seen if they have the lyrical prowess that will keep them afloat in the music industry.

However, people are already speculating whether the rebels have dexterity and temerity – through music – to knock Macheso off his perch as the undisputed king of sungura.
Innocent Mjintu and Zakaria Zakaria, who broke away from the legendary Macheso, failed dismally to make their mark on the music scene.

If anything, the Aquatic Complex show, come July 12, has raised anticipation, excitement and anxiety among fans, who would definitely want to see, how the group will fare on their debut performance.

The formation of the group will also put Slomo’s singing prowess under the spotlight.

While Slomo is known as one of the best dancers in the country, little is known about his singing capabilities except that he was an exceptional dancer and would once in a while do backing vocals for Macheso.
