Geo Pomona Waste Management is set to receive its first fleet of refuse compactor trucks by July as it intensifies preparations to roll out door-to-door waste collection across Harare.

To date, the company has removed over 82 000 tonnes of waste from illegal dumpsites in the capital, marking a significant step in addressing the city’s long-standing waste management challenges.

Speaking during a tour of the company’s waste management facility by Special Advisor to the President on Evaluation and Implementation of Government Projects, Dr Joram Gumbo, Geo Pomona CEO, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya confirmed that truck procurement is well underway.

“We have already secured the refuse trucks, and manufacturing is nearing completion,” he said.

“By July, we expect delivery, and we’ll commence household waste collection using both compactor and tipper trucks.”

He added that the company is also on track to begin producing electricity at its waste-to-energy plant by 2027.

“We took over from City of Harare in April 2022 and began operations in May 2022,” he said.

“We are progressing according to schedule and expect the first phase of the waste-to-energy facility to be completed by 2027, allowing us to generate electricity for the national grid.”

Dr Gumbo praised the initiative, highlighting its transformative impact on Harare’s waste management.

“For too long, Harare has struggled with an overwhelming waste crisis,” he said.

“Illegal dumpsites and poor disposal systems have posed serious public health risks, polluted our environment, and degraded urban living standards.

“This project is not only preserving the environment — it is restoring it. It’s creating jobs, revitalising communities, and supplying power, all while cleaning up the city.”

Senator Charles Tawengwa, Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution, also commended the development, emphasising its broader community benefits.

“This is a comprehensive facility that serves the community in multiple ways,” he said.

“In addition to waste management, it includes FIFA-certified sports facilities, with more recreational amenities on the way.”
