IT was party time at ZITF Hall 3 as Zimbabwe’s basketball team began their hunt for a medal in the AUSC Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games by beating South Africa 62-51 on Monday.

Zimbabwe managed to beat their much fancied opponents by racing to a lead and making sure that as much as South Africa sniffed a come-back they were always ahead.

As far as momentum goes, Zimbabwe had it in spades in this match. They poked, probed and passed their way out of almost every jam that South Africa presented.

Zimbabwe’s biggest boon was their ability to turn defence into instant attack.

What Zimbabwe lacked in top defenders, they more than made up for it with uncannily disruptive length and athleticism in the frontcourt.

They wreaked wingspan havoc all over the floor, shooting gaps from the weak side and disrupting entry passes with pernicious aplomb.

The result: a win over South Africa.
