The pleasant relationship between the Government and the Catholic Church has transformed communities nationwide, providing health, education and food aid.
Speaking at the centenary celebrations of the Catholic Church-run All Souls High School in Mutoko over the weekend, the church’s Harare Diocese Archbishop Robert Christopher Ndlovu, who was presiding over the ceremony, said the good relationship and church has positively impacted communities.
“We are thankful to the Government for supporting the church in various ways. We are partners. In hospitals and education, we are together, not to mention even in other areas we join hands together for the betterment of our people.
“This school where we are gathered today (Saturday) in Mutoko, is in the remote areas, but this is where we are supposed to be with the people. This is where we should make a contribution and a difference. Let us be in these areas and see how people are making it out in life.”
Vice President Constantino Chiwenga graced the celebrations and was accompanied by Senate president Mabel Chinomona, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Aplonia Munzverengwi as well as other Government and ruling party officials.
“I want to thank parents around this place and traditional leaders here present. This school has managed to reach a hundred years in this place because you welcomed the first missionaries to this place.
He applauded the Dominican Sisters for their contributions to the school and establishing an orphanage.
“To the teachers here present, you have to realise that most of the time as children grow up, they are in your hands and you should take that duty seriously, more so if they are in a boarding setup, it becomes your duty to be their parents and parent them on both human and spiritual values which will help them in their future,” Vice President Chiwenga said.
He exhorted the educators to serve as social role models. Students were also urged to make use of the opportunity given to them by their parents.
“Your parents are sacrificing so much for you so do not disappoint them. Stop drug and substance abuse. Desist from that. Please make sure you are leaders of today not only for tomorrow. Do better now and empower yourselves with the education that you get here,” VP Chiwenga said.
