Residents and ratepayers owe Kariba Municipality at least $12 million, an official has revealed. Director of housing and community services Mr Godfrey Tichaona Magijani yesterday urged debtors to clear their arrears for the authority to improve service delivery.

“We are currently being owed $12 million. Debtors should pay their rates to enable council to provide decent services. Debtors must play their part by making sure they pay their rates for them to enjoy quality service delivery from council, as current collection levels are at 50 percent of billed rates.”

Mr Magijani said the municipality accepted payment plans and defaulters were likely to be sued.

“As council, we are open to payment plans, so those with arrears must come and make payment plans. Failure to do so, council will resort to debt collectors to those not forthcoming with payment plans,” he said.

Mr Magijani said council had embarked on a number of projects in line with the 100-day plan.

“Council embarked on $136 000 Nyamhunga Sewer line upgrading being funded by the Government, as well as upgrading of sewer lines from 150mm to 225mm and fencing off of the sewer ponds to deter animals. As council, we set aside $35 000 for the recycling shed at the dumpsite in partnership with German International Zimbabwe to enable recycling of waste.”
