A USE it or hand -it- over policy might be the end result for radio stations that fail to launch having been issued with radio licences last year.
Eight commercial radio stations namely Ya FM, Bulawayoas Skyz Metro FM, Breeze FM in Victoria Falls, Faya FM in Gweru, Nyaminyami FM in Kariba, Diamond FM in Mutare, KE 100.4 in Harare and Hevoi FM in Masvingo were issued with licences.
Of those, only Ya FM in Zvishavane and Diamond FM in Mutare are already on air.
a?What we are saying is that if radio stations are failing to operate they should surrender those licences, so that other people can be given those licences,a? said Zanu- PF MP for Makonde and Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Media, Information and Broadcasting Services member Kindness Paradza.
Paradza added that he would love to see more stations going on air- even in his own constituency courtesy of the digitalisation programme.
a?I would also love to have a community radio station in my constituency so that I can communicate with my electorate. But for the meantime we are saying let the digitalisation take care of that space as we expect 40 television stations and 80 radio stations,a? he said.
