THE Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority community has been plunged into mourning following the tragic loss of one of its bravest members, Knowledge Mudzimureka (28), who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal encounter with a rhino.

In a statement, ZimParks spokesperson, Mr Tinashe Farawo, confirmed that Mudzimureka passed on last Sunday, after a two-week battle for survival.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Knowledge Mudzimureka, a dedicated and valued member of our anti-poaching and wildlife monitoring team. His courage and service will not be forgotten,” he said.

Mr Farawo said on May 26, Mudzimureka was on a routine patrol with a fellow ranger in the Savé Valley Conservancy, tracking a rhino when they encountered a mother black rhino and her calf, an unexpected and perilous situation.

“The protective rhino severely injured Mudzimureka, inflicting critical wounds to his abdomen, left lung, head, shoulder, and knee. He was swiftly evacuated by air ambulance to a private hospital in Harare, where he underwent two major surgeries to stabilise his condition, followed by another procedure to treat a life-threatening lung infection,” he said.

Mr Farawo said despite initial signs of recovery and growing medical optimism, Mudzimureka’s condition suddenly deteriorated, leading to his untimely death.

The Savé Valley Conservancy also released a heartfelt statement, highlighting Mudzimureka’s commitment and the loss felt across the community.

“Knowledge was a valued member of our team. He grew up on the edge of the conservancy in Manyuchi Village and had recently married. He leaves behind a young wife and an unborn child. He was deeply loved by his teammates and will be sorely missed,” reads part of the statement.

He was buried on Wednesday in Manyuchi Village, Masvingo, where his life, service, and sacrifice was honoured by friends, family, and fellow rangers.

The tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers faced daily by conservation personnel working to protect Zimbabwe’s precious wildlife.
