Riveting semis beckon at Junior Tennis Open

AFTER getting a bye in the round of 16 at the Arenel Harare Metropolitan Junior Tennis Open, second seeded Danai Chimano secured a place in the semi-finals of the Under-18 girls.

Chimano defeated Nandi Munyulwi 7-6, 6-1. The 15-year-old said she was looking forward to the next game and expects a tougher contest. “I am looking forward to the semis and I hope to do well.

“I just managed to work on what the coach said and it worked well for me.

“I am now looking forward to a tough match as my opponent is good, judging from the previous games we have played.

“By her reaching this stage, it means she is doing well and I will be geared up for the match,” Chimano said. The Arundel student will now face fourth seed Tanyaradzwa Magunje in the semi-finals set for today at Harare Sports Club.

Magunje got the better of Vimbai Moyo through a walkover and was awarded a 6-3, 6-3 aggregate score.

Munyonga progressed after getting the better of Tinaye Muzeyi 6-2, 6-3 while Dembo was victorious against Shyleen Thole 6-1, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

The other semi will see third seed Kundai Manyonga play top seed Tariro Dembo.

In the boys’ section, Alesha Chikanda, the top seed, will play third seed Richard Ngwarwi. The duo progressed to the semis by defeating Sinfree Tizora and Alex Yalias respectively. Chikanda beat Tizora 6-1, 6-1 and Ngwarwi beat Yalias 6-0, 6-0.

The doubles and the mixed doubles of the tournament continue this morning at Harare Sports Club and St George’s College.
