Goromonzi residents have thanked th Government through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development for the rehabilitation of one of their busiest roads which links the growth point with the Harare-Mutare Highway.
The road had a 2km stretch which was badly damaged during the rainy season.
The stretch is now complete and open to traffic, with residents commending the job and thanking authorities for the roadworks.
The road was rehabilitated under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme.
Mr Gift Murenzvi, a resident and Goromonzi businessman, said the stretch was now usable and good for the commuting public.
“As a resident, I thank the Government for rehabilitating this stretch,” he said. “It has been a hard task driving along this road, but now after its rehabilitation, we enjoy using it and we commend authorities for that.”
Another resident who is a kombi driver, Mr John Mwisika, said the Government had done a good job by rehabilitating the damaged road.
“I used to be worried that my vehicle will be damaged by the potholes on this stretch, but I now drive freely knowing that the road is good,” he said. “We thank Government for this.
“Our wish is for the authorities to upgrade some of the roads in Goromonzi for us. The programme should not end on one road. However, so far we are thankful as drivers.”
Mrs Mudadikwa, another resident, was also grateful for the road works.
“I am thankful as a resident that Government has remembered us,” she said. “The stretch is now usable and safe even for us pedestrians.”
Mashonaland East Provincial Engineer Mrs Martha Ndoro said they will soon put speed humps to avoid unnecessary accidents which maybe caused by speeding motorists on the rehabilitated road.
She said her office was satisfied with the work done by the contractor.
“We are planning to put some speed humps along that stretch soon to avoid accidents,” she said. “Reports suggest that some motorists are now speeding. So, soon, speed humps will be erected there.”
Government is working around the clock to rehabilitate and upgrade most roads across the country after most of them were severely damaged by heavy rains last season.
