MINISTER of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe has said it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure road safety in the country.

Speaking at the launch of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays road safety awareness campaign, Minister Kazembe said the number of lives that have been lost through avoidable accidents on roads in the past is a stark reminder of the dangers that people face as a result of reckless driving.

He called upon all road users, including drivers, pedestrians and transport operators, to ensure that they are responsible on the roads.

“As road users, we have a responsibility to collectively create a safe environment on the highways,” Minister Kazembe said.

“The observation of road rules can neither be abrogated nor relegated to second thoughts. It is a responsibility that comes with the constitutionally granted freedom of movement and the right to use the road.

“During the forthcoming Heroes holidays, most people are likely to travel across the country. History has shown us that such increased movement of traffic comes with increased road carnage.

“I have directed that the police be in full force across the country’s roads and ensure that they bring to book anyone found on the wrong side of the law.”
