Robber succumbs to gunshot wounds

A ZIMBABWEAN man who was part of a gang that shot and killed two South African police officers in Johannesburg last week has died from wounds sustained in the shoot-out.The man, whose identity was being withheld, died in a hospital under police guard.

According to reports, the shooting incident came after police officers pulled over a vehicle near the Edenvale off-ramp in Johannesburg when the occupants of the car opened fire.

The Zimbabwean, who was one of the occupants, was later arrested and taken to a hospital where he died a few days later.

The other suspects sped off in their getaway car, a Mercedes-Benz, which was found abandoned a few metres from the scene. Police officers also recovered several firearms.

Constables Maisha Mafokoane, Mthokoziseni Myeza and Steven Mafanelo were attacked by a gang of heavily armed men on the N3 last Sunday, according to media reports.

South African police had arrested a total of five suspected armed robbers in connection with the murder of the two police officers.

They had reportedly spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle along the N3 Highway and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the occupants fired towards their vehicle.

Cst Mafokoane and Cst Myeza died from injuries, while Cst Mafanelo sustained serious injuries and was reportedly recovering in hospital.

According to reports, South African police had arrested a total of five suspected armed robbers in connection with the murder of the two police officers.

A police spokesperson, Colonel Noxolo Kweza was quoted as saying the suspects were arrested in and around Gauteng and Durban.

She said the suspects were expected to appear soon in Durban, Johannesburg and Alexandra magistrates’ court.
