MICRO-FINANCE lender Nissi Finance, owned by the businessman, Sonny Phiri, lost $70,000 after a gang attacked a security guard and raided two safe-deposit boxes. The gang of two men and a woman seized the large amount of cash after arriving at night at the Nissi Finance offices at Peppermint Place at the corner of George Silundika Street and 11th Avenue.

Phiri, who is married to former Miss Zimbabwe, Lorraine Maphala, was in South Africa when the robbers ransacked his office.

Yesterday, police sources said they had been given a description of two men and a burly woman who were involved in the raid on June 15.

The robbers brutally attacked a security guard and then used keys to gain access into the building, a source close to the investigation said.

Once inside, they raided the Bureau de Change safe-deposit box using a grinder. They then seized more cash from a second safe in Phiri’s office.

Bulawayo police spokesman Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo referred questions to the CID which is leading the investigation, but their spokespersons were unavailable.

Phiri said: “I have no comment.”
