EIGHT balaclava-clad robbers assaulted a security guard at Giants Sports Bar in Dangamvura in the early hours of Sunday before breaking into the premises and making off with crates of beer, cigarettes and US$315.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said on Monday, at around 2am, Joseph Joromani, of 146 Area 3, Dangamvura, who owns the bar, was informed by Tinashe Mupambwa (37), a break-in at Giants Sports Bar Complex.
Joromani rushed to the scene and found his guard, Pias Maziveyi (67), of 10853 Federation Phase 1, Dangamvura, Mutare, who narrated the ordeal.
Maziveyi said that while on duty at around 1am, he was encircled by eight unknown men wearing balaclavas. One of them struck him on the right arm and leg with a blunt metal bar and he fell.
While on the ground he was tied with rope on both hands and legs.
The victim was dragged to a dark area, and his mouth was covered with a scarf.
The assailants used an unknown sharp object to cut and break the screen door and locks to gain entry.
They proceeded to break the counter screen lock, ransacked the bar, and stole US$315.
The left the doors wide open.
Mupambwa, a passer-by, untied the guard, who then reported the matter to ZRP Dangamvura.
Police attended the scene together with CID Mutare and the Mutare Canine Unit.
No arrests have been made.
Maziveyi was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for treatment.
