POLICE in Bulawayo are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the body of a man who died at Mpilo Hospital after being assaulted for robbery by a mob.
The man, believed to be in his early thirties was assaulted by community members who later took him to the police in Magwegwe.
In a statement, the Bulawayo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said the body of the deceased is currently held at Mpilo Mortuary.
“On 21 December 2024 at around 3am, the now deceased and his friends attempted to commit a robbery in Lobengula West suburb.
“However, the people whom they were trying to rob cried for help and the community members came to their rescue. They gave chase to the robbers and apprehended the now deceased.
“The now deceased was assaulted and later taken to ZRP Magwegwe, he was unconscious and did not have any form of identification. The police called an ambulance and he was taken to Mpilo Hospital where he later passed on.
“He is currently held at Mpilo Mortuary and was wearing a red and black scotch trouser, a green t-shirt, a black jacket and white tennis shoes,” she said.
Assistant Inspector Msebele urged the public to always carry some form of identification.
“We are encouraging the public to always have some form of identification on them. This helps police investigations and closure to remaining relatives.
“We appeal to members of the public who are missing any relative who matches the above description to contact ZRP Magwegwe on (0292) 425136 or 424471 any nearest police station,” she said.
