For a while it looked as though Brendan Rodgers’ team may edge home if not in style but at least in comfort.
Substitute Danny Ings scored his first Liverpool goal early in the second half and the home team looked set to ease away from a Norwich team that had not lacked ambition but had not really troubled them either.
There is nothing certain about the modern Liverpool, though.
They remain a rather flighty team and just after the hour they proceeded to gift Norwich a way back in to the game when goalkeeper Simon Mignolet flapped at a corner and visiting captain and central defender Russell Martin volleyed the ball in.
As Liverpool struggled last season, Mignolet was consistently fundamental to the problem.
