A prominent educationist in Beitbridge was fatally knocked down by a speeding car along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway last week. Mr Thomas Gumbo (54), who was the principal at Welton Primary School, was knocked down while he was crossing the road at a pedestrian level crossing.
He was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Honda Fit that allegedly overtook another vehicle, which had stopped to give way.
Sources close to the case said Mr Gumbo was coming from Beitbridge District Hospital and heading to a bank at the NSSA complex.
Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the matter was still under investigation.
“The man was hit by a speeding Honda Fit at the 318km peg while approaching the road from the western side,” he said.
“Indications are that the driver of the Honda Fit overtook a vehicle which had stopped to allow the man to pass at a pedestrian crossing.
“He sustained serious head injuries as a result of the impact and was rushed to Beitbridge District Hospital. Further investigations into the matter are underway.
“At the same time we urge motorists to always abide by the road traffic regulations to avoid unnecessary incidents.”
The accident comes a few month after a 32-year-old unlicensed habitual traffic offender was jailed for 30 months for fatally knocking down a Beitbridge Rural District Council employee, before speeding off.
Last year, an unlicensed police detective based in Beitbridge was fined $500 for killing two pedestrians while speeding when he made an overtaking error.
Detective Darlington Mujabuki (38), popularly known as Javas in the border town, knocked down the victims on June 22, 2016.
