The Judicial Service Commission (JSC)has given the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing two weeks to come up with a feasibility study report on where to build the Labour and Civil Courts as part of the same complex as Harare Magistrates’ Courts in Rotten Row. The two courts will be built as wings flanking the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.
JSC chairman Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku, accompanied by JSC secretary Justice Rita Makarau and other high-ranking judicial officers, yesterday visited the court and toured the two sites earmarked for the project.
Addressing journalists, Justice Makarau said the Ministry of Public Works was assisting and guiding them on how to go about the project.
“The Harare Magistrates’ Courts (complex) is lying on 4,3 hectares, so we want to find out how best we can use the land. We have given the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing a tight timeline and we expect them to come back to us within two weeks,” she said.
The present Civil Courts are situated at the corner of Simon Vengai Muzenda Street and Kwame Nkrumah Avenue on premises rented from the Government while the Labour Court is also on rented premises in Kwame Nkrumah Avenue.
