AFTER a rocky start to the season, Highlanders Royals finally found their rhythm — and their roar — with a much-needed 2-0 victory over Maningi Youth Soccer Academy at Heart Stadium on Saturday.
The Royals, desperate to escape the basement of the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League, broke their two-match losing streak in style.
Diana Nyika broke the deadlock shortly after halftime, sending fans into a frenzy, and Juliet Tafataona sealed the deal with a 66th-minute strike that buried Maningi’s hopes of a comeback.
Once queens of the local game in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Royals had become a fading memory. But Saturday’s win was a flash of the old fire, a reminder of the days when legends like Samukeliso Mahlangu and Bridget Zimunya dominated the field.
It hasn’t been easy for the Bulawayo-based outfit — like many underfunded teams, they’ve struggled to stay afloat. But this win might just be the shot of confidence they need after opening losses to Mposa Academy (2-1) and FC Platinum Royals (3-0).
Meanwhile, Chapungu Queens continue to fly high, topping the log unbeaten alongside Correctional Queens and Platinum Royals — all with a perfect 9 points.
Weekend Results at a Glance:
Maningi YSA 0–2 Highlanders Royals
Black Rhinos Queens 4–0 Conduit Soccer Academy
Cranbourne Bullets Royals 0–3 Correctional Queens
Platinum Royals 2–0 Black Mambas Queens
Is this the Royals’ comeback trail or just a lucky break? Time will tell.
