A Mutasa woman is ruing the day she spread false allegations about her neighbour’s unfaithfulness after she was sued for that.

Catherine Gwebe recently dragged Veronica Matepo to Headwoman Mupotedzi’s court where she was made to pay for damaging Gwebe’s reputation.

Matepo said she was sorry for spreading the lies.

However, Headwoman Mupotedzi’s court would not accept the apologies without compensation for the aggrieved woman.

Headwoman Mupotedzi said to clear Gwebe’s name, Matepo had to compensate her with a goat.

In making her application, Gwebe said her marriage is teetering on the brink of collapse after Matepo labelled her a woman of loose morals in public.

“My husband wanted to divorce me because Matepo also alleged that our child was not his. She said I was using him to look after another man’s child. Since my husband knows Matepo as my good friend, he bought her story and confronted me. Even after she asked for forgiveness, my husband insisted that she knew something about the child’s paternity,” said Gwebe.

She said she reluctantly took the matter to Headwoman Mupotedzi’s court after her husband continued nagging her.

“My marriage almost collapsed because of Matepo’s reckless utterances. To this day, my husband is convinced that she knows something about the paternity of our child. I had no option, but to report the matter to this court because my marriage is on the verge of collapsing.

“I want her to publicly apologise so that everyone knows that I am not promiscuous and that all my children are my husband’s,” said Gwebe.

Matepo said she regrets her actions.

She begged for the court’s, Gwebe’s and her husband’s forgiveness.

“I do not have the money to clear her name, but I am truly sorry. I said the words out of anger following a misunderstanding. I accused her of having multiple sexual partners and spreading sexually transmitted infections.

“I uttered all this out of anger. I know that since then, her husband has been on her tail. He has been approaching me, asking me to shed more light on his wife’s shenanigans, but there are none. I am really sorry for my actions,” said Matepo.

Matope was ordered to compensate Gwebe with a goat to clear her name.

However, Matope said she could not afford to buy the goat.

Her husband then chipped in and promised to bail her out.

In her ruling, Headwoman Mupotedzi said the allegations were malicious, nasty and designed to hurt Gwebe.

She said this caused her considerable distress and humiliation.

“As women, we should not degrade and insult each other. We should be there to support each other. We should be there for one another, not these malicious intentions.

“This was just wrong and to add insult to injury, you are failing to pay the fine. This woman might be divorced by her husband because of this issue. This should not be taken lightly, her name should be cleared forthwith,” she said.

The headwoman said failure to give Gwebe the goat by today (Friday), Matepo will be handed over to Mutasa Magistrates’ Court to face contempt of court charges.
