THE double burial for two national heroes, Brigadier General Victor Rungani (Retired) and former Central Intelligence Organisation director Cde Walter Basopo, set for Wednesday at the National Heroes Acre, will be the sixth of its kind.
There have also been two triple burials at the national shrine.
In January this year, Major-General Solomon Siziba (Retired) and Cde Chenhamo “Chen” Chakezha Chimutengwende were buried on the same day, while Ambassador Johannes Tomana and Brigadier General Milton Siziba (Retired) were buried in August 2023.
In January 2021, the late former Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba, and Zanu PF Central Committee member Cde Moton Dizzy Paul Malianga also had a double burial.
On April 13, 2016, Cdes Victoria Chitepo and Vivian Mwashita were buried on the same day; while Cde Maud Muzenda, the widow of the late Vice President Simon Muzenda, and Cde George Rutanhire also had a double burial on August 26, 2017.
The first triple burial occurred on January 27, 2021, when former Cabinet Ministers Dr Sibusiso Moyo and Dr Joel Biggie Matiza and retired Major-General Paradzai Zimondi (Retired) were interred at the national shrine.
The second triple interment of national heroes was on April 29 last year, when Cde Nash Nyasha Dzimiri, Brigadier-General Shadreck Vezha, and Cde Tsitsi Grace Jadagu were buried.
