LONG and middle-distance runners from across the country will next week meet in Harare for the National Cross Country championships at Morris Depot.
The championships will see senior men competing in the 12km race while the senior women and junior men take part in the 8km event on February 7.
Junior women will fight for honours in the 6km race.
All the country’s 10 provinces are expected to field their athletes as the event will be used to select the team to represent the country in the regional championships.
National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president, Tendai Tagara, said they are going to choose four athletes from each category for the regional championships.
“Each province brings a team for men and women, juniors and seniors. We are also inviting those that are not in the provincial teams to come and participate. They will compete as independent.
“There is going to be the regional championships, so it’s a selection event for the regional meet. We are going to select four athletes from each category,” Tagara said.
Some of the provinces had their provincial competitions last week while the remaining ones are expected to have done so by the time the national event is held.
Munyaradzi Jari and Olivia Chitate are the reigning champions in the senior men and women categories.
