Rural communities unite to tackle GBV through innovative approaches

EMTHONJENI Women’s Forum (EWF) is hosting a brown bag event to spotlight the organisation’s efforts in combating Gender based violence within rural communities.

The event happening at a local hotel in Bulawayo aims to unpack emerging trends in GBV with a focus on shifting patterns, the intersection of technology and climate change displacement, among others.

In attendance are stakeholders, women and men from Umzingwane District who are funded by the organisation to partake in projects to sustain their livelihoods.

The project structure includes young mothers, community counselors, male champions and families who will showcase their work and share the challenges faced during their projects and how they overcame.

Stakeholders had an opportunity to tour these structures.

During her welcome remarks EWF’s director Ms Sikhathele Matambo said the event brings together stakeholders to share and exchange information on the successes, challenges and gaps in their work.

“We have been implementing a programs called strengthening women’s agency in ensuring women claim their rights, which uses an ecological framework to address GBV prevention and response,” she said.

The organisation initiatives include working with young mothers, promoting positive parenting and engaging community based counselors and male champions of change.

The event will also provide a platform for civil society organisations to offer solidarity speeches.

Key stakeholders and organisations will hold a panel discussions on “Breaking Barriers : Innovative Pathways to End GBV to highlight GBV prevention and response in a digital era amongst other issues.
