A 23-YEAR-OLD Rusape man, Ian Katemera, has been arrested in connection with the murder of Mavhudzi High School teacher, Mr Norman Guri, whose body was found last week with its head crushed.
Detectives arrested Katemera, a neighbour of the deceased, after receiving a tip-off naming him as the prime suspect.
He was taken in for questioning and allegedly admitted to ambushing and attacking Mr Guri with bricks and huge stones.
Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the arrest, adding that Katemera allegedly took Guri’s cellphone and keys after the attack.
He allegedly went to Guri’s home and stole US$50 from a wallet.
Detectives have since recovered the cell phone, which Katemera allegedly sold to Frency Chitikutuku in Vengere suburb.
“On July 24, 2026 at around 8pm, Guri left home for Old Magamba Business Centre for beer drinking. Around 9:30pm, he was last seen leaving Machera Bar by the bar lady Leeway Kadumba. The following morning, around 7am, his body was discovered by informant Media Magura (56), of Old Magamba, about 50 metres from a dusty road. She found a blood spoor and followed it for about eight metres from the road and found his body lying face down. She reported the matter to ZRP Rusape Central.
“Investigations were launched and on August 2, 2026, detectives received information to the effect that Katemera might be the one who murdered the deceased. Detectives reacted to the information and picked him up. He was questioned and admitted to have killed Guri, who was his neighbour. He revealed that he hit him several times with bricks and stones before taking his cellphone and house keys. He also attempted to burn the deceased’s body before proceeding to Guri’s house. He entered the house and stole US$50 from a wallet and then locked the door and threw away the keys. He led detectives to where he had sold Guri’s cellphone and it was recovered from Frency Chitikutuku. The accused person is in custody assisting police with investigations,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
He was expected to appear in court today.
