Rusape till operator steals goods worth over US$4000

A 29-year-old till operator from Rusape has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for theft after she stole goods valued at US$4 448 at her workplace.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority Rumbidzai Matangakufa, who worked as a till operator at Elimart Trading in Rusape, would print ‘re-print’ receipts from prior purchases made by other customers without authorization and issue them to unsuspecting new customers.

“This was discovered on December 17, 2024, by a security guard who noticed a re-print for brown sugar (2x10kgs). The offender attempted to persuade the security guard not to report the incident.

“Following this incident, management was informed, and a review of the CCTV footage revealed that the accused was placing receipts under the till in a box, which she would then issue to customers, contrary to company policy,” said the NPA in a statement.

An external audit was then conducted on January 16, 2025, which confirmed numerous re-prints from the offender’s till.

“The audit identified specific items and their total values that were targeted through these reprints. The total value of goods stolen is US$4,448.00, and no recovery has been made,” reads the statement.
The Rusape Magistrates’ Court sentenced Matangakufa to an effective 18-month prison term.
