SA-based Zimbabwean muso launches DVD

ANOTHER South African based Zimbabwean born Maskandi musician has released a musical DVD, which has reportedly taken the music industry by storm across Limpopo. Originally from Kezi in Matabeleland South province, the musician, born Sebenzani Ncube, but affectionately known by his stage name Mehlokazi, released the DVD titled Izitha, which he said was a compilation of two albums.

“Izitha is a compilation of two music albums Izitha and Iphupho Lami. We are still in the process of getting the DVD to be aired on TV stations in South Africa and hopefully in Zimbabwe as well. The official launch dates are yet to be finalised,” said Mehlokazi.

Although it has become somewhat of a trend for Zimbabwean artistes to migrate to neighbouring South Africa seeking “greener pastures” Mehlokazi said it was a tall order to gain recognition especially in the music industry where they would be competing with locals who he said were equally talented.
“It’s difficult for foreign artistes to get airplay from local radio and TV stations,” he said.

The 12-track DVD was produced in South Africa and features tracks such as the hit Bayanginyonkoloza featuring another popular Zimbabwean Maskandi singer Zinjaziyamluma, who hails from Tsholotsho.

The DVD also features songs such as Nzalo kaMzilikazi and Mama which he said was a tribute to his mother who passed away early last year.
He said the DVD was readily available and was being distributed at the Hillbrow theatre, which has over the past few years become the home of most Zimbabwean artistes seeking to gain recognition through live arts and performances.

Early last year several Zimbabweans converged at the theatre to commemorate Zimbabwean hero, the late Dr Joshua Nkomo.
Many talented Zimbabwean artistes have left the country for South Africa with the hope of gaining experience and exposure in the industry but only a few have managed to achieve that goal.
