SA clubs tussle for top Zimbabwe goalie

South Africa’s SuperSport United have once again renewed their interest in a top Zimbabwe goalkeeper, facing off with Kruger United for his services.

Donovan Bernard has been targeted by Premiership’s SuperSport United for some time now but the move has never materialized.

It has now emerged that the Gavin Hunt-coached side is keen on one last push to lure him from his current club, Chicken Inn Football Club.

But they face strong competition from first division side Kruger United who appear to be the front-runners for Bernard’s signature.

Polokwane City FC are also believed to be interested.

In fact, the goalkeeper was due to leave today for Kruger to meet his potential new employers. Kruger are reportedly eyeing a defender from Chicken Inn as well.

The 29-year-old proved to be a cut above the rest during the 2024 Zimbabwean season after keeping 20 clean sheets in 34 matches.

Ultimately, he won the Goalkeeper of the Season award for his brilliance in goals for Chicken Inn.

Meanwhile, Chicken Inn are prepared to let him go, as they also pave way for budding goalkeepers in their ranks.

The club secretary-general Tavengwa Hara said: “Anything is possible at this stage. We can only wait to see what happens. Hopefully, it will be for the best.”

Bernard is one of the goalkeepers that have enjoyed game time at national team level.

He last played during the last round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers where Zimbabwe played against Lesotho and Bafana Bafana.

Though he was on bench against Bafana Bafana, the steady goalie has had significant impact.

Bernard has previously had attempts to play in South Africa. In 2022, his anticipated move to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) FC hit a snag.

The goalkeeper returned home after failing to agree terms with TTM who wanted to put him on trials before signing.

However, hopes are high that he will finally make a move to the PSL as he continues to rise in stock. (https://farpost.co.za)
