SOUTH Africa-based regional soccer instructor Carlos Henriques is happy with the number of referees who will be taking part in a five-day FIFA referees course at Eaglesvale in the capital. The course was divided into two categories with the women and men courses held separately. All the FIFA panels’ referees and ZIFA referees are attending the course which is being conducted by FIFA regional instructors Felix Tangawarima and Henriques.
Henriques said he was happy with the turnout and believes the referees will benefit a lot from the course.
“We have a good number of 35 men and 35 women taking part and that is a good turnout.
“The referees are showing a lot of zeal and the turnout is encouraging. I did not have the opportunity to attend to the course in Zimbabwe last year but the numbers have improved immensely.
“The world over refereeing has been improving and I believe it is the trend here as well. There can be mistakes but with technology everything is improving and I believe that is helping the referees as well.
“We are looking forward to a great week as we will have some fitness tests for the referees after the course,” Henriques said.
Zimbabwe has not had some high-profile referees for some time with Ruzive Ruzive being forced to return home from the COSAFA Cup in South Africa because of poor officiating.
Tangawarima said the country could still produce good referees.
“I think everything has a beginning and the young referees will learn and do well in the future.
“I think we have a chance to produce reputable referees in the future as long as FIFA gives us chances to conduct these course,” said Tangawarima.
