A SOUTH African national has been fined for illegal possession of live ammunition at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
Cuan Reed Govender (25) was found with five live bullets in his black satchel.
He had no valid firearm certificate or other lawful authority to be holding them in Zimbabwe.
He pleaded guilty to the offence before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo.
He was ordered to pay a fine of US$300 before March 30 and the ammunition was confiscated.
In court, Govender, who lost his left hand, claimed that he didn’t know how the bullets had got into his bag and said he was attacked last year and has been taking self-defence lessons.
The court heard that last Friday, Govender, who is employed by Wiremit Zimbabwe, arrived at the airport intending to travel to South Africa carrying a blue suitcase and a black satchel.
He placed his luggage on the scanning machine which detected five live ammunition.
The matter was reported to the police and his luggage was searched leading to his arrest and the subsequent recovery of the five live ammunition in a pocket of his satchel.
Belinda Chimuka appeared for the State.
