their recent win over Kenya in Harare last weekend.
Sables’ coach Brendan Dawson was confident that his charges will beat Uganda in the Victoria Rugby Cup set for Hartsfield on Saturday.
The Sables will be in Bulawayo for the Uganda tie buoyed by their big victory over Kenya in Harare.
The present squad is a mixture of youth and experienced and Dawson is confident that they have finally gelled into a unit that could become a force to reckon with on the continent.
He attributed the Sables’ resurgence to four years of “hard work” during the rebuilding exercise.
“It’s taken us four years to get to this stage, but I’m happy that we now have a team that’s competitive and things can only get better.
“I believe we can win this weekend’s match, but we have to guard against complacency.
“By the time we go for the next World Cup qualifiers our youngsters in the team would have gained enough experience and they will be the backbone of the team.
“We have set our sights on playing in the 2015 World Cup and we just have to continue playing well and guard against complacency,” Dawson said.
Some of the players that Dawson has called in for camp, who are likely to play for Zimbabwe in the next World Cup qualifiers, include Zimbo Busters’ 22-year old Lloyd Machanjaira.
Tatenda Karuru, who was part of the national Under-20 team that played in Georgia last month, is also part of the Sables.
They trained alongside experienced players Gardner Nechironga, Daniel Hondo, Costa Dinha, Cheetahs’ skipper Jacques Leitao and Njabulo Ndlovu at the Christian Brothers College yesterday.
Sables’ manager Noddy Kanyangarara said the main goal was to have a foundation for the World Cup qualifiers.
He said they also wanted to win the Victoria Rugby Cup to announce their return to the top table of African rugby.
“As a nation we have been rebuilding and we want to win this Victoria Rugby Cup but the ultimate goal is to improve on the world rankings and make sure that by the time we go for the World Cup we are among the continent’s top nations.
“We need the nation to rally behind the boys and cheer them all the way even if the chaps are down,” Kanyangarara said.
Uganda are expected to arrive in the country tomorrow and they will train at the Stadium tomorrow.
If Zimbabwe beat Uganda at the weekend, they will equal the Class of 1987 that went for an unbeaten run of four matches.
Nechironga is expected to lead the team’s attack and probably show his hometown fans a repeat of his last weekend’s performance against Kenya in Harare where he had a brace of tries.
The Sables’ leading points scorer is Tichafara Makwanya with 27 points accumulated from the first leg in Uganda and in the game against Kenya.
