THE Sables duo of Hilton Mudariki and Shayne Makombe started their 2015 season with a bang as their sides won their games in their Varsity League competitions on Monday night. Makombe’s University of KwaZulu Natal Impi thumped Tswane University of Technology 68-5 in the second round of the second tier competition — the Varsity Shield.

The Sables winger was the second highest scorer in the game as he chipped in with two of the 10 tries his side scored, Marcel Coetzee scoring three for the convincing win.

Scrummy Mudariki, starting for University of Johannesburg in the top-tier Varsity Cup, was in good form in midfield where, despite not scoring, was key with his good ball distribution skills and excellent vision. He helped UJ to a 46-10 thrashing of newcomers Central University of Technology Ixias.

This game had 10 tries, five yellow cards and a red card

This led UJ to pitch at the top of the latest log standings.

Mudariki could soon be joined in the UJ line-up by former Zimbabwe Under-18 captain and prop Stephen Bhasera who recently got a full scholarship at the same institution to study law.

“I got a full scholarship to study for a BComm in Law at the University of Johannesburg. At the moment I am waiting for a study permit before I leave for South Africa. I am going to play in the Young Guns which is the Varsity Cup for the Under-20 and for the Lions Under-19 in the Currie Cup,’’ said Bhasera.
