The Zimbabwe side finished third at the tournament after losing to Hong Kong and Belgium but got the better of the United Arab Emirates on the final day of the event for their face-saver. Prior to taking part in this tournament, the Sables had also travelled to Namibia where they lost to Spain and hosts Namibia in the Windhoek Lager invitational tournament.
Zimbabwe took with them 25 players and three technical members in the form of coach Brandon Dawson, assistant Cyprian Mandenge and physiotherapist Abigail Mnikwa, and member each of the team was promised to get US$250.
This translates to a total bill of US$6 250 for the 25 players who travelled to Dubai. According to the mutual agreement between the players and the Sables committee, the Sables were due to get their payments at the end of last month but seven days later, they are yet to get any payment.
And seven days into another month the players are yet to receive their dues from the Bongai Zamchiya-led committee which is is responsible for fund-raising for the team. Last month, Sables chairman Zamchiya told the media that they turned down the invitation from Namibia Rugby Union for a friendly match in March as “it was too early in our season”.
