Sachiti, The Herald features writer is a winner!

The confirmation of the award was made by ICOM on Tuesday. ICOM is the professional initiative for promoting values and ethics in secular and religious journalism and media in general.   In a letter to Sachiti from ICOM, the award will be conferred at the World Media and Journalism Congress to be held for the first time in Central America in Panama City, Panama from 29 September to 6 October 2013.

“The Jury took the decision considering the value and the relevance of the theme you submitted. We hope that your efforts and contributions through the  more and more challenging world   of journalism will help better the humanity worldwide and the environment,” the ICOM Jury wrote to Sachiti.

“I submitted articles on gender based violence in Zimbabwe and beyond. GBV remains a challenge not only in Zimbabwe but globally. Journalists should therefore  play a pivotal role in denouncing all forms of GBV,” Sachiti said.

According to ICOM, the triennial awards honour outstanding  media professionals, publications and institutions worldwide and recognize their exemplary contributions irrespective of all differences.

The organization says that more than 2 000 entries were submitted worldwide. There are 25 winners of awards and honourable mentions in eight categories which include: women issues, excellence in journalism, inter-religious initiatives, EduCom, solidarity with refugees and photojournalism, just to mention a few.

Sachiti started her journalism career as a cadet reporter with the Sunday Mail in June 2003. She was promoted to senior reporter in 2006 and moved to The Herald , Zimbabwe’s leading daily newspaper, in August 2009 where she is Deputy Features Editor.

Sachiti’s journalism career continues to blossom and is  made more interesting with various honors since she started writing including  special mention at the International Catholic Union of Journalists (Ucip) Solidarity with Refugees Award- 2010; winner of the Child Reporter of the Year (2008-9) Zimbabwe Union of Journalists and Unicef); winner of the Women in Leadership reporter of the Year award (2008 and 2009 ZUJ and MS Zimbabwe) among others.
